SanDisk announces today at the Flash Memory Summit that it is providing Lenovo with its SanDisk X100 high performance solid state drive (SSD) in use in the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon, high-end 14 inch UltraBook PC.
Starting at $1,249 the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon premium UltraBook will be available in two capacities 128GB and 256GB, following on Apple’s lead with the MacBook Air, Lenovo designed a smaller SSD form factor, this allows Lenovo to design a smaller slimmer UltraBook and to better control third party upgrades.
The SanDisk’s X100 SSDs is an mSATA 3 (6 Gb/s) interface, and offer up to 500 MB/s sequential read speeds, and up to 430 MB/s sequential write speeds. The drive can also reach 76,000 IOPS random read and 43,000 IOPS random write speeds.
The drive is based on a Taggle-Mode SanDisk MLC NAND flash with a Marvell controller and with a dedicated SanDisk firmware, uses tiered caching technology to direct data streams to the appropriate layer for maximum performance, greatly improving responsiveness and extending the life of the SSD. It also features an extreme endurance of 80 Total Bytes Written TBW under 128 GB/day workload.
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon is available starting August 21st.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon weighs in at less than three pounds, has an exterior made of extremely lightweight carbon fiber material, boasts optional embedded 3G connectivity for anywhere, anytime Internet access, and relies on a 256GB2 SanDisk X100 SSD for incredibly responsive, small form factor storage. The version of the SanDisk X100 SSD being used by Lenovo relies on a custom design that is smaller than the typical SSD, helping to reduce both the size and weight of the Lenovo X1 Carbon, as well as reducing power consumption. SanDisk offers the X100 SSD in both 256GB and 128GB capacities.
